Dr. Sarita Verma

Dr. Sarita Verma

Vice President, Education

Dr. Sarita Verma is a Professor Emerita in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, and until January 2016, was Associate Vice-Provost, Relations with Health Care Institutions and Special Advisor to the Dean of Medicine at the University of Toronto. Formerly the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (2008-2015) and Associate Vice-Provost, Health Professions Education (2010-2015), she is a family physician who originally trained as a lawyer at the University of Ottawa (1981) and later completed her medical degree at McMaster University (1991). She has been a Diplomat in Canada’s Foreign Service and worked with UNHCR in Sudan and Ethiopia for several years. Dr. Verma is the 2006 recipient of the Donald Richards Wilson Award in medical education from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada; the 2009 co-recipient of the May Cohen Gender Equity Award from the Association of Faculties of Medicine in Canada; and the 2016 recipient of the Charles Mickle Fellowship from the University of Toronto for excellence in medical education. From 2009-2011, she was one of the lead consultants for the Future of Medical Education in Canada Postgraduate project. For six years she held the position of Governor at the University of Toronto, has been a board member of several teaching hospitals, the Michener Institute, Associated Medical Services and the Chair of the Canadian Residency Matching Service. From 2011 to 2015, she was the Co-lead for the Canadian Inter-professional Health Leadership Collaborative at the Institute of Medicine’s Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professions Education and is a key member of the Association of Academic Health Centers International Steering Committee.

As Vice President, Education, Dr Verma continues her work in social accountability and inter-professional education, and implementing the Future of Medical Education in Canada recommendations along the continuum. She supports AFMC Committees and Networks and leads the Canadian Conference in Medical Education secretariat.

Jon Kimball

Jon Kimball

Director, Data and Information Services

Jon Kimball brings with him over 20 years of experience in healthcare data management and implementing systems with a focus on improving health through better use of information. He has a proven track record of understanding the complexities of healthcare and harnessing information to make a difference.

Jon holds a BA in Electronics Engineering, and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant and carries the Project Management Professional Designation (PMP). He joins us from Better Outcomes Registry Network (BORN) Ontario, a provincial program that collects data on all pregnancy and births in Ontario via the BORN Information System, which he was hired to develop.

Jon previously worked as a manager for Cancer Care Ontario, where he focused on improving processes and outcomes, and leveraging technology and information to improve patient care. He has worked in a number of organizations in Canada and the United States, and has been responsible for strategic planning, technology selection, joint application development, reporting, capacity planning, as well as project and resource management.

Laurence Peterson

Laurence (Larry) Peterson

Director, Corporate Services

Larry Peterson is a corporate services professional with a long track record of helping organizations develop their financial and management frameworks. His career spans over 25 years. Prior to joining AFMC Larry was employed by the City of Ottawa for 19 years, during which time he established and subsequently managed the unit responsible for developing and monitoring internal/system controls, policies, process improvements, indirect taxation, and business advisory services, which led to significant organizational efficiencies. Before joining the City, Mr. Peterson was engaged by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) to develop the management capability of a water utility overseas. In his dual role as Project Adviser and Corporate Services Manager, he successfully transformed the government water services division into a viable commercial entity. He also held leadership positions in multinational corporations such as Fisher Scientific and Mitel, and three not-for-profit organizations.

Mr. Peterson holds a MBA and a Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation. In his capacity as corporate services director, he will be responsible for the finance, human resources, information technology, and administration portfolios within the organization.

Melissa Shahin

Director, Operations and Strategic Initiatives

Melissa Shahin first joined AFMC in 2009. She has extensive project management experience and involvement in national-scale, collaborative initiatives and holds a strong track record of effectively managing projects on time, within scope and under budget. In her time with AFMC, Ms. Shahin has contributed to a range of projects including the suite of initiatives to implement the Future of Medical Education in Canada across the continuum of medical education; francophone minority, public and Aboriginal health initiatives in Canada; accreditation of interprofessional standards into education programs across six health disciplines; as well as eLearning and eHealth projects that support and integrate innovation into the Canadian medical education system.

Prior to joining the AFMC team, Ms. Shahin has worked with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development on land claims research and resolution, and with the University of Lethbridge conducting research and analysis of Canadian case law progression. Ms. Shahin is forward-thinking with a passion for strategic planning and process improvement. She holds an Honours degree in Political Science with a focus on Canadian constitutional law and aboriginal studies and is actively working toward her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

Dr. Danielle Blouin

Secretary, CACMS and CACME

Dr. Blouin graduated from Université Laval Medical School and completed a Family Medicine / Emergency Medicine residency from the College of Family Physicians of Canada at Queen’s University, and an Emergency Medicine residency from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada at McGill University.
Her commitment to education led her to undertake a Master of Health Professions Education degree at the University of Illinois at Chicago from which she graduated in 2003.  She is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in education from the same university.
From 2006 until 2013, she served as Director of Faculty Development for Health Sciences at Queen’s University.  She chaired the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada resources group on faculty development from 2008 to 2011.  She has been involved as an educator and scholar in numerous faculty development projects at the provincial, national and international levels. Dr. Blouin maintains an active academic clinical practice in emergency medicine at Queen’s University, and was granted professorship in 2012.

From June 2013 to June 2014, she served as Assistant Secretary to the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and since July 2014 she has been Secretary to CACMS and to the Committee on Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME).
