The Awards

AFMC Award for Outstanding Contribution To Faculty Development In Canada

The AFMC Award for Outstanding Contribution to Faculty Development in Canada recognizes excellence in faculty development by an individual faculty member in a Canadian Faculty of Medicine. This award is intended to emphasize the importance of faculty development in academic medicine. Exceptional faculty members with an MD, other health professional degree or PhD who demonstrate vision, innovation, and leadership in faculty development in their faculty of medicine are eligible.

AFMC Charles Boelen International Social Accountability Award

The AFMC Charles Boelen International Social Accountability Award was created in 2014. This AFMC award named after Dr. Charles Boelen, a world leader in Social Accountability aims to celebrate individuals, groups of people or organizations whose professional accomplishments reflect the principles of social accountabilityas defined in the Global Consensus for Social Accountability of Medical Schools.

AFMC Clinical Teacher Award

The AFMC Clinical Teacher Award recognizes excellence in clinical teaching by an individual faculty member in a Faculty of Medicine in Canada. This award was established in 2014 and is intended to emphasize the importance of clinical teaching in academic medicine. Exceptional faculty clinicians with an MD or another health professional degree who demonstrate vision, innovation, and leadership in clinical teaching in their faculty of medicine are eligible.

AFMC Clinician-Scientist Award

The Clinician-Scientist award emphasizes the importance of excellence in all pillars of health research in advancing knowledge and recognizes an individual in Canada who has provided an exceptional research training environment for medical students, residents, fellows, health research graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. Nominations are open to clinician-scientists who are licensed healthcare practitioners at a Canadian medical or health science faculty.

AFMC Gold Humanism Award and Lecture

The AFMC Gold Humanism Award and Lecture was created in 2018 to emphasize, reinforce and enhance the importance of humanistic qualities among medical school students and faculty. The nominations are open to physicians, nurses and other members of the health care team who practice in Canada or practitioners and researchers in health professions education.

AFMC Indigenous Health Advocacy Award

The Indigenous Health Advocacy Award recognizes and celebrates the outstanding efforts of an Indigenous person in medical education and/or health research who has worked to improve the health of Indigenous Peoples situated in Canada. This award recognizes the outstanding dedication of an individual or faculty member towards the dismantling of anti-Indigenous racism and the advancement of cultural safety, advocacy, health equity and wellness of First Nations, Métis and Inuit people. Nominations are open to Indigenous learners/trainees or faculty members.  

AFMC John Ruedy Awards for Innovation In Medical Education

The AFMC John Ruedy Awards for Innovation in Medical Education (‘John Ruedy Awards’) are two national awards to recognize innovation work in medical education. Both Awards recognize the contributions made by Dr. John Ruedy during a lifetime of study and work in five Canadian medical centers, including Dalhousie University where he served as Dean from 1992-1999. His interest in advancing medical education practices, his involvement with many Canadian medical schools, and his own publishing record including several textbooks, led to the decision to open these awards to all individuals working in Canadian medical schools and acknowledge the legacy he leaves to medical students, residents, and clinicians.

AFMC Learner Changemaker Awards

The two Learner Changemaker Awards each celebrate an exceptional 1) medical learner (medical student/resident) and 2) a health research graduate student/post-doctoral scholar who has created real and meaningful change for those training in Canadian faculties of medicine or health sciences faculties. Nominations are open to a medical education learner and a health research trainee, including any undergraduate, postgraduate, or graduate student or post-doctoral scholar currently enrolled or training at a faculty of medicine or health sciences in Canada.

AFMC May Cohen Equity, Diversity and Gender Award

The AFMC May Cohen Equity, Diversity and Gender Award was established as a national award in 2003. This award recognizes the outstanding effort or achievements of an individual(s), program(s), department(s), or faculty in improving the equity diversity, gender, and inclusivity environment in academic medicine in Canada. Named after May Cohen, the award is to exemplify the characteristics that she represents.

AFMC Mentorship Award

The AFMC Mentorship Award recognizes a faculty member who demonstrates an exemplary and sustained commitment to providing outstanding mentorship, guidance, and inspiration to colleagues within Canadian faculties of medicine. This award acknowledges the time mentors dedicate to provide guidance for career development in clinical work, teaching, education, research, leadership, and advocacy. The dedication of faculty mentors fosters the career development and academic success of their colleagues. This award also recognizes the altruistic nature of mentoring. Exceptional faculty clinicians or health researchers with an MD or another health professional degree who has demonstrated through dedicated service, a substantial contribution to mentorship within their faculty of medicine, are eligible.

AFMC President’s Award for Exemplary National Leadership in Academic Medicine

This award recognizes individuals for their excellence and exemplary national leadership in advancing the AFMC’s vision for academic medicine in either research or education. Nominees should be faculty members of a Canadian Faculty of Medicine with highly distinguished accomplishments and who have had an extraordinary impact at the national level related to their leadership. Nominees should have achieved pre-eminence in medical education, biomedical or health services research. Individuals in the past or present who have served as Deans, are or were members of the Board of the AFMC, are or were paid employees or consultants of the AFMC are not eligible for this award.

AFMC Scientist Award

The AFMC Scientist Award emphasizes the importance of excellence in all pillars of health research in advancing knowledge and recognizes an individual in Canada who has provided an exceptional research training environment for undergraduate students, medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows, and post-doctoral scholars. Nominations are open to health researchers who hold a PhD (and who are not a licensed healthcare practitioner/provider) at a Canadian medical or health science Faculty.

AFMC Wellness Award

The AFMC Wellness Award recognizes an individual in Canada who has shown dedication to the promotion and advancement of the wellness of physicians, medical students, residents, fellows, and/or researchers, graduate students, and post-doctoral scholars. Nominations are open to faculty clinicians, medical students, residents, or graduate students associated with a Canadian Faculty of Medicine.

AFMC Young Educators Award

The AFMC Young Educators Award recognizes the outstanding effort or achievements of an individual within their first seven years as a faculty member who produced change within their Faculty of Medicine or the general medical community. Exceptional candidates or faculty members who demonstrate vision, innovation, and leadership in their faculty of medicine are eligible. This award is open only to candidates with an MD or graduate degree in a related health field.
