Postgraduate medical education (PGME) in Canada is part of a complex integrated system whose goal is to produce the physician workforce to meet the health care needs of Canadians.

The number of entry routes to residency, funded by provincial governments, should be based on our collective responsibility to be accountable to the populations we serve. An Entry Route is any field of medical training that can be entered directly from medical school. It is the funders (MOH) and the Medical Schools that collaboratively determine which training programs and the number of positions that will be funded.

Entry Routes differ from disciplines, which are defined by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), the College of

Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) and the Collège des Médecins du Québec (CMQ).

Currently Canada produces physicians who have expertise in 87 disciplines, of which 30 are Entry Routes to residency.

All these types of physicians are required to meet the healthcare needs of Canadians, however the current entry routes into residency may no longer best meet the needs of certain undersubscribed disciplines, the needs of students who are unable to choose disciplines they cannot access during medical school and, most importantly, the needs of Canadians.

AFMC is engaging all stakeholders and working collectively to align entry routes to societal needs to improve the healthcare of Canadians.
