AFMC Applauds Federal Government for Largest Ever Commitment to Health Research

OTTAWA, March 1, 2018 – The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) is pleased with the federal government’s major commitment to health research in Budget 2018, which provides a new investment of $1.22 billion over five years to the Tri-Council, including $354.7 million for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the new funds of $275 million over five years for interdisciplinary and international research, and of $21 million to increase diversity in science.

Faculties of Medicine Confirm Support for Students during Resident Match Week and Beyond

OTTAWA, February 27, 2018 - On March 1st, the majority of graduating Canadian medical students will finally learn which specialty they will train in and the location of their training for the next two or more years.  This is the culmination of a process that has occupied our students from as early as the beginning of medical school. Some students will proceed to the next round of the residency match and consider a new career path or location from amongst the remaining residency positions.

Deans of Medicine Lead Charge to Increase Resident Match Success Rate for Graduates of Canadian Medical Schools

OTTAWA, February 13, 2018 - Immediate attention is required to address the growing number of Canadian medical students who are unable to match to a residency and then practice medicine. In 2009 the number of unmatched was 11, in 2017 it was 68. By 2021 the number of current year unmatched students is projected to exceed 140 while prior year unmatched will exceed 190.

AFMC and CaRMS Sign New Resident Matching Service Contract

OTTAWA, November 15, 2017 - The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) and the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) are pleased to announce agreement on a new resident match service contract which comes into effect today.

“This new contract introduces enhanced clarity, while affirming the core principles of Canada’s residency match process, including CaRMS’ continuing role as an independent provider of a fair, objective and transparent application and matching service,” states CaRMS CEO John Gallinger.
